Built in the 1930s as part of the residence of the French Resident Supérieure, the historic house at the heart of today’s Azerai La Residence Hue forms the architectural foundation of the property. Its distinctive Art Deco / Streamline Moderne character, elegant proportions and riverside setting continue to define the spirit of the house almost a century later.
1953 · The Governor’s Palace, Hue
Long before it became La Residence, the house belonged to another chapter of Hue’s story. The 1953 photograph offers a glimpse of the riverside setting and the residence as it once stood — a quiet witness to the changing landscape of the city. Today, that sense of place remains at the heart of La Residence: a connection to Hue, its river and its enduring character.
A New Chapter
2005 · La Residence Hotel & Spa
In 2005, the historic residence opened its doors as La Residence Hotel & Spa, beginning a new chapter for this riverside landmark in Hue. Two complementary wings were added around the original mansion, creating the distinctive composition of the property today, while the new architecture was designed to complement the character of the original house and keep its heritage at the heart of a contemporary hospitality experience.
A New Identity
2011 · A Continuing Evolution
In 2011, La Residence entered another chapter in its identity. While the house remained rooted in its architectural heritage and connection to Hue, its identity as a distinctive luxury hotel continued to evolve. The original house, Art Deco character, Perfume River and sense of place remained at its heart — carrying the story forward rather than leaving the past behind.
Becoming Azerai
2019 · A New Chapter in the Journey
In 2019, La Residence became part of Azerai, marking another significant chapter in the story of the house. The identity evolved, while the heritage remained. The original residence, its distinctive architecture and its connection to Hue continued to form the foundation of the experience. Under the Azerai name, the house entered a new era while preserving the sense of place and personal connection that had shaped its journey.
